Marc Bloch was a French historian and a founding member of the Annales School of French social history. He specialized in medieval history and published widely on medieval France. Bloch was born in Lyon to an Alsatian Jewish family and was educated at the École Normale Supérieure. Bloch worked at several universities, including the University of Strasbourg, the University of Paris, and the University of Montpellier. His legacy continues to be felt today, with his work remaining widely read and studied by historians and scholars around the world. He was influenced by the works of Ernest Renan and Gabriel Monod. Bloch's influence can also be seen in the work of other notable historians, such as Ernest Gellner and Pierre Bourdieu.
